Environmental Policy

Speak Carbon Collective is a Community Interest Company. The employed team is based in Yorkshire. We have Associate Members across the UK.
We are ‘not-for-profit’ delivering climate learning. We;

  • Develop and deliver Carbon Literacy training for other organisations in multiple sectors.
  • Focus on engaging people, behaviour change and climate communication planning in relation to reducing carbon emissions, in support of achieving net zero targets.
  • Value equality in all its forms, being acutely aware of the links between climate crisis and climate justice.

Impacts

Speak Carbon’s aim is to raise awareness of climate impacts and actions which individuals can take in the workplace and at home. Our programmes engage and empower people to reduce their environmental impact, with a focus on emissions reductions.
We are committed to reducing our own environmental impact and believe in a ‘do as I do’ strategy, aiming to lead by example wherever possible. We are committed to continual improvement, pledging to;

  • Source sustainable products and services –
    • Our banking services are provided by Triodos and our pension services by Nest.
    • We only purchase items we need to carry out our services, minimising waste of resources.
  • Meet virtually with each-other, clients, prospects and partners as appropriate to avoid travel miles, balanced with the needs of meeting face-to-face on some occasions for our personal well-being.
  • Prioritise travel by public transport i.e. bus and train, but where this is not feasible, plan efficient journeys for face-to-face meetings and training sessions.
  • Encourage employees and Collective members to;
    • Print only when necessary, double sided and turn off equipment when not in use.
    • Understand and minimise their digital footprint.
    • Avoid, redirect and recycle waste wherever possible.
    • Purchase renewable energy.
    • Purchase refurbished office & tech equipment wherever possible.
    • Feel safe and confident asking any climate & sustainability related questions in a non-judgmental culture.
  • Promote vegan and vegetarian catering provision at training sessions, meetings and other events.
  • Apply and share good practice with those around us, supporting them to make sustainable decisions, via our training and other services, and our social media and marketing communications.
  • Raise awareness of FETCH – the key areas society needs to act upon to reduce our carbon footprint; Food, Energy (for production), Transport, Consumption and Heating.
  • Ensure compliance with all current environmental regulations.

Speak Carbon has been accredited as a Platinum Carbon Literate Organisation. However, we have identified that since establishment in 2021, we do not currently have an accreditation to demonstrate our environmental credentials. We have agreed at board level to choose an appropriate green accreditation scheme and develop an Environmental Action Plan to ensure we meet the requirements of the chosen policy. The Environmental Action Plan, together with this policy, will comprise our Environmental Management System (EMS). We will update this policy and publish which scheme is independently certifying our Action Plan and EMS. Our certification will be maintained through an annual audit carried out independently by certifying body.
