November’s Pledge of the Month is from a Managing Data Architect at Netcompany.
We delivered two cohorts of Carbon Literacy training to tech solutions firm Netcompany at the start of 2024.
I particularly like this pledge because it acknowledges the role tech has to play in developing and promoting green tech solutions. Green coding is a burgeoning discipline in tech and the more we can amplify the work going on in this space the faster the move to more sustainable coding practices will be.
Interestingly, much of the work happening around green coding is looking back at how software used to be written 20 years ago. Back then, slow processing speeds and bandwidth restrictions forced developers to be efficient with their coding. Advances in internet access and processing capabilities since then have actually allowed coding to become less efficient. This article from IBM is an enlightening read on the topic.
There is so much to be done in tech around energy efficiency. It was therefore particularly encouraging to see pledges like this one being made during our work with Netcompany.
