The importance of getting together

Report on Speak Carbon’s 2nd annual conference

When you all work from home, the value of meeting in one room cannot be underestimated.

Working remotely has its benefits. It can reduce emissions when the distances to get to the office are considerable. However, the debate is on as to whether a nearby commute is more or less carbon intensive than sitting alone at home in a room being heated for just one person.

Delivering training online definitely increases our reach, with participants often joining from multiple offices and even different countries. And whilst we get together online frequently, nothing beats being in the same room for wellbeing, sharing ideas and overall motivation.

With this in mind, we staged our second annual collective conference in Leeds on June 12th. Alongside the joy of being together, a lot of content was covered in the day. Here’s what we did;

Climate Fresk

As part of our extended offering, we understand that shorter courses work better for some clients who want to provide climate learning to more or all of their teams. For many, if not all of these learners, activities where they interact with the course materials are more meaningful and memorable.

Thus, we’ve added Climate Fresk to our portfolio of services, as we’ve identified that it produces the desired outcomes. “Climate Fresk” is a hands-on workshop that aims at raising awareness and understanding among people about climate change, as humanity faces unprecedented challenges.

Massive Reach

Originally designed in France, the gamified activity has reached of 1.5 million participants. During the conference, we took time to review the updated cards, (as seen in the image). The content originates from the IPCC’s scientific findings and created into an interactive workshop triggering challenging discussions among participants. The numbers speak for themselves in terms of success of this intervention.

Sociocracy

Not only is Speak Carbon a Community Interest Company; with the word Collective in our name, we aspire to do business in a collaborative way, which meets the needs of all our members.

Working Collaboratively

In order to create a working environment where everyone has the opportunity to have an input into the way the collective is run, we implement a model called Sociocracy. Being in the room together provided a chance to run a refresher on the sociocratic process which we use. We divided into two groups to work on two different real-life ‘proposal’ scenarios. After our discussions we shared notes and take-aways which we’ll be applying to completing these processes and future interventions.

New Products

Alongside the day’s workshops, the organisers allocated a portion of the agenda to looking at new services. These are being developed in response to client and prospects requests and conversations. It’s not all new because some of these products are already available and you can discuss them in discovery calls. If you’d like to find out more, you’re always invited to book a call!

All will be revealed in future news items and communications, so check back in!

And the ‘Thank you’ goes to…!

Big thanks and a ‘shout out’ goes to Netcompany, who generously provided the room and facilities, as part of their ESG programme, supporting communities and businesses.

Our out-of-towners found the offices really convenient to get to. Of course, this is no coincidence because Netcompany made a point of renting space within easy walking distance from the station for their staff coming from the London office.
